INTRODUCTION

Problem solving and decision making skills should not be left to learning by experience or by chance. Problem solving and decision making are serious business activities. If a company forms a wrong problem statement, it may end up spending resources to put right what was not the problem in the first place. Likewise if a wrong decision is made, it may cost a company to waste its resources, lose an opportunity or to suffer financial losses. This programme is customized for participants who would like to develop skills in problem solving and decision-making.

Session 1: A Practical Approach To Problem Solving

  • Identifying the real problem from the signs of a problem
  • Forming A Problem Statement

Session 2: Problem Solving Framework
Key Learning Areas:

  • Why-Why Diagram: This technique helps problem solvers explore many more possible causes & relate them to the overall problem rather than focusing on a single narrow cause. The why-why diagrams leads to a more thorough analysis
  • Picture Stimulation : Drawing pictures seem to aid the creative process as it activates your creative right brain. This technique aims to provide ideas for brainstorming a problem from the viewing of one or more pictures. Excellent for getting to new ideas that wouldn’t be spawned by your normal idea generation processes

 

  • What Patterns Exist? Look at the available information. Do you see any patterns or relationships, causal or otherwise? Draw a diagram showing the interconnections among the facts you have uncovered

Session 3: Problem Solving – A Case Study

Session 7:  Decision Making Procedure

  • Identify the decision to be made together with the goals it should achieve

  • Develop alternatives

Session 8: Decision and Risk Taking

  • What is risk?
  • Risk evaluation
  • Calculate the expected value of each of the following risk

Session 9: Putting It All Together

TRAINING METHODOLOGY

This training programme will be activity based with a ration of 70:30. It means participants will be doing active participation in 70 % of the programme. The trainer will provide coaching, guidance and debriefing for the other 30% of the time. The problems selected would be actual problems at the workplace that would be used as case studies.

  • Diploma in International Advertising (Dip.IAA, New York)
  • Cert.Ed (TESOL), Pantai Valley Teachers’ College, Kuala Lumpur
  • Master in Business Administration (Hull)

Philip Tan is a management and soft skills guru, international public speaker, corporate trainer and motivator. Philip has both academia and industry experience from a diverse range of career paths that include holding senior positions in tertiary education, dotcom, advertising and marketing and hospitality training. In his dynamic career route, he has held portfolios of dean, vice president and chief executive officer. He was also the Senior Examiner for the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK (CIM). Currently, Philip also supervises the post-graduates candidates of the University of East London (UEL) in their masters dissertations.
