IMQ Certificate in Team Leading
1. GENERAL INFORMATION
ILM has devised a suite of International Management Qualifications (IMQ’s) specifically for International Centres. They link directly to ILM UK qualifications although they have a different structure and assessment process.
The IMQ Certificate in Team Leading covers 4 Key areas:
01 Team Leading Skills
02 Getting The Work Done
03 Leading People in Teams
04 Communicating With People
Aim and Objectives
The ILM IMQ Certificate in Team Leading aims to give practising and potential team leaders the foundation for their formal development. It is also appropriate for participants working from inside teams, who may not be specifically designated as team leaders but who have some responsibility for the group’s outputs.
The programme has two primary objectives:
- to assist participants in gaining the basic knowledge required by a team leader
- to develop basic team leading skills
Entry Requirements
Participants will normally be either practising or aspiring team or cell leaders. There are no formal educational requirements but learners should have a background that will enable them to benefit from the programme. Additionally, candidates will need to have sufficient literacy skills to complete and meet the assessment criteria. Candidates who have completed an IMQ Introductory Certificate in Team Leading can claim exemption from study for Sessions already completed in Key Areas. However, there is no exemption from the full assessment requirements for the ILM IMQ Certificate in Team Leading.
Progression
Participants may progress to ILM IMQ Introductory Certificate in Management or the ILM IMQ Certificate in Management. The IMQ Certificate in Team Leading also links directly to components of the ILM Level 2 Certificate in Team Leading but there is no exemption from the assessment requirements of that qualification.
ILM Membership Benefits
During the registration period candidates will have the opportunity to apply for Student membership and on successful completion of the IMQ Introductory Certificate in Management will be eligible to apply for Associate membership of ILM with the post nominal letters of AMInstLM.
Candidate Profile
This qualification is likely to be best suited to candidates who match the following characteristics:
- they will be part of the team and be practitioners or operators working alongside other team members
- they will be more than ‘team members’ inasmuch as they will have some span of control over the other members of the team
- their span will typically be a small group of 6 – 12 and this distinguishes them from a first line manager who would have two to three times that number to manage
- they will not be first line managers as they will be focussing on short term day to day operational issues rather than longer term
- they will be responsible for allocating tasks within the team and providing ongoing support to team members
- their main focus will be on motivating the team to achieve pre-determined targets to meet customer or supplier requirements as agreed by their organisation
- they will be the main conduit of communication between the team and the next layer of management in the organisation
- their decision making responsibilities will lie with day to day operational issues normally within their own areas of technical competence or experience as opposed to changing standard practices

4. CANDIDATE REGISTRATION ROUTES
There are two routes:
4.1 Integrated
A single IMQ Certificate in Team Leading is awarded on satisfactory completion of the whole programme and meeting the assessment requirements of the qualification.
4.2 Key Area (Modular)
Each Key area can be certificated separately. One certificate of Key Area credit at Team Leading Certificate level is awarded on satisfactory completion of the learning and development for the Key Area, and meeting the Key Area assessment requirements. Where a participant achieves all five separate Key Area credits and goes on successfully to complete any additional assessment requirements then a full IMQ Certificate in Team Leading is awarded.
5. LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT
ILM encourages flexible modes of delivery to suit the requirements of participants and employers, and TNI has available various resources to achieve this. Reflective learning and personal development are also essential features of the programme, to be achieved through the Personal Development Records (PDRs).
6. EXTERNAL VERIFICATION
Each centre approved by ILM to run the IMQ Management programmes will be allocated an ILM External Verifier (EV). The EV has four main functions:
- to monitor standards of specific programme provision and assessment
- to conduct holistic monitoring of the centre’s operations against the original accreditation documentation (and any current amendments), and overall compliance with the requirements of ILM
- to support and advise Centres in establishing and developing effective programmes
- to act as a channel of information between Centres and ILM
Monitoring of standards of programme provision
This will normally be done remotely by the EV selecting a sample of:
- candidates’ Personal Development Records (PDRs)
- candidates’ written answers to the knowledge questions
The sample will vary in size depending on the centre’s background and history but it is likely to be 30% in the first instance. Desk based sampling will be required by ILM London. On-line sampling is also acceptable and will be encouraged.
